A natural cedar ikabari plate, dyed throughout in a light indigo.

A waterproof coating compliant with Japan's Food Sanitation Act covers the whole piece, so the indigo stays put and the plate is easy to keep clean.

A piece with this much function in it changes the look of a table.

What ikabari means

In Tokushima, ikabari is the part of a tree from the roots up to about a meter above the ground.

Furniture and building timber are cut from higher up, where the trunk runs straight, because straight grain is even grain and the result looks uniform.

Down at the roots, the ikabari shows you a tree in the act of reaching into the ground.

That grain is unruly and uneven, which is why it has never been treated as fine timber — and it is exactly where Mai Kobo believe the character of the wood lives.

Only a little can be taken from any one root, so only a few plates are ever made.

We hope you find something of one tree's life in that unruly grain.

Please read before ordering

Being a natural material, the size can vary by about 1cm.

The Cerawood waterproof coating, compliant with the Food Sanitation Act, improves heat resistance, water resistance and durability, so the piece will last.

It is a natural material: grain and color differ from piece to piece.

Please do not use a microwave or an oven.

To clean, wash with a soft sponge and wipe the water off with a cloth.

The wood is rare, so please allow around two months from order to delivery.

Items ship either directly from Mai Kobo in Tokushima or from our own office, Edit Japan, in Saitama.
